 What are porous materials or surfaces?
To determine if a material is porous (permeable to fluids), test with a drop of water. If it is not absorbed, the surface/material is not porous. Do not apply ProtectGuard on non-porous materials.
Exemples of porous materials: concrete, polished concrete, grouts granite, marble, travertine, masonry surfaces, limestone, natural stones, paving stones, bricks, sandstone, wood

Application of ProtectGuard or ProtectGuard HD to grout will help prevent the formation of mold and mildew growth.
Why should I use ProtectGuard products on concrete or fresh concrete ?
Even new concrete is subject to the deteriorating effects of moisture, especially in winter. When air temperatures are above 32 F, water can penetrate into concrete. As temperatures drop, the absorbed moisture will freeze and expand. The expansion of the ice crystals can be greater than the available pore space in the concrete, causing spalling. Also, road salts used in deicing can contaminate your concrete as they melt from the under-carriage and fender wells of your vehicle. Absorbed salts cause oxidation of reinforcing steel and can lead to cracking and scaling of concrete. ProtectGuard products will prevent these problems by stopping water penetration and "screening out" damaging salts. It won't change the look of your diveway, or make it slippery.

· Water repellent test (hydrophobia).
Hydrophobia is measured with water solutions containing isopropanol in increasing concentrations, numbering from 1 to 10. The test consists of putting some drops of these solutions onto ProtectGuard treated substrates and then to observe the “wetting effect”. Grading is to the number corresponding to the solution which contains the highest isopropanol percentage (that is to say with the lowest surface tension) and which does not wet the substrate after a 30 seconds contact. The higher the grade the greater the water repellent effect of the treatment.

· Oil repellency test (oleophobia).
Oleophobia is measured in accordance with the method described in the Technical Manual of the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATTC 118 test). It evaluates the material non-absorbtivity by a series of 8 oil liquids whose surface tensions are increasingly lower. The test procedure is the same as for the hydrophobia test. The number given corresponds to the oil number with the lowest surface tension and which doesn’t wet the substrate after a 30 seconds contact. The higher the grade is, the more effective is the oil repellent effect of the treatment.

What are penetrating sealers?
Penetrating sealers are sealers (protective treatment) that chemically bonds to the material to become part of its integral structure.
Will ProtectGuard products protect my concrete against salt damage in winter?
Yes ProtectGuard products will protect against the damaging effects of freeze/thaw cycles which occur when salt is spread on icy roads and then tracked up your driveway.
Are the concrete sealer products non-yellowing?
Yes all of ProtectGuard products are non-yellowing to sunlight and UV exposure.
Are ProtectGuard products really graffiti resistant?
Preventative treatment with ProtectGuard products will stop ink and paint pigments from penetrating the porous surface. A medium pressure wash with a power washer is generally sufficient for graffiti’s early removal to be simple, quick and low cost. The use of antigraffiti orproducts may be required for complete removal in very few cases. After graffiti removal, ProtectGuard products do not need to be reapplied.
Can I paint over a surface protected with ProtectGuard products?
No. A surface sealed with ProtectGuard products shall not be painted over or be applied any type of coating over. |
